I don't know if they still make or sell them, but when I was in High School (27 years ago) we used a "bangsite" cannon. This is a little cast iron cannon that used a powder & water and sounded just luke a real cannon when lit. Nothing actually came out of it except smoke. We got it at a hobby shop. They're probably illegal now due to this overprotective Government, but it was perfect for what we needed.
