Look down the list for two threads, "Rim Question" and "A Visit with Doug Elliott", both of which bear on your questions.

I'm coming to the view that the rim should match the face, the backbore should match the horn and the cup should match the sound you want to obtain. It's a simplification, to be sure, but I'm thinking these days, based on recent experience, that it may just be as simple as that.

So, if you want different sound characteristics, then get a mouthpiece with a rim that's comfortable for you but with a different cup. If you want to fix intonation or response problems on your horn, than the backbore is likely going to have a bigger effect.
