Something I am finding in my own playing is that if I can hear the air going in as I inhale, I get much less air. I seem to be able to fill up more quickly if I do it with a minmum of sound. Where I used to need a good quarter-rest to fill up, I can do it in a 16th's time now. Since I can fill up more quickly, and get more air in a shorter amount of time, I can sneak a breath a little more often, thus staying in the "positive air" as Mr. Jacobs would put it.

The only way to breathe quietly is to have no restrictions all the way in, especially in your throat. But don't concentrate on the mechanics, just get the result. If you get the result, then the mechanics are usually correct.
