What? Doesn't everyone scratch out their serial number, just in case Big Brother is watching? I fear the day that Big Brother says "enough is enough" and confiscates my horn for playing too much horn, trombone, and flute music on it.
Plus, when the horn gets stolen, it makes it much easier to identify. Rather than having to remember a long serial number (or *gasp* write it down somewhere), you can simply report is as "the 186 with no serial number." This increases your chances of recovering "your" tuba as well--each serial number is unique, but there can be many tubas with no serial number.
All in jest, of course. I wish those who fall victim to this sort of crime the best of luck in getting their instument back.
