I made the switch over the summer. I started on my shiny new CC in may and was quite comfortable by the time school started back up in the fall. If needed, I probably could have started playing in ensembles much sooner than that.

It took a while to be comfortable playing both CC and BBb (Sousaphone in marching band, CC in concert and chamber ensembles). I would often get the fingerings confused when reading. It has now been over 10 years since I swithched. I have added F and Eb fingering to the mix, as well as other instruments (I am a band director). I found the the "switch" helped me to become much better at transpositions and has helped me to be a better teacher.

If you are struggling with the new fingerings or are in fear of a CC because of the need to learn something new, don't worry...It will become second nature.
