FWIW, it is VERY easy to have a VIN number altered when re-registering a vehicle in a different state, even easier if you have a friend at DMV like many crooks do. I move a lot and have a hard enough time getting them to put the CORRECT one on the title and registration. Putting serial numbers on EBay would only stop the small timers, not the profesional theives.

My opinion, after having my Ford Taurus declared a Ford Talon by motor vehicles and once getting a ticket for a 53 mile hour zone on my permanent DMV record that I could never get corrected, and having my old Jeeps' VIN's come out different every time I registered them.
