There are lots of stories of this sort of thing...I know that Dave Read had a tape rejected from the Baltimore Symphony's 2nd trombone audition years ago, crashed the live audition, and won. I had two friends share the ride with me to the Cleveland Orchestra bass trombone audition in 1984. They crashed the audition, and after insisting that they be allowed to play, were ushered in at the end. Each played one excerpt, and heard a loud and nasty, "Thank You!!" Two very different results.

These days I think it would be next to impossible to go to an audition uninvited and expect to play. Orchestras have no obligation to listen to you.
