You do not remember correctly, Joe was there in the mid 80's (if you've heard the most powerful Mahler 3 first movement ever (Bernstein/1987)you'd know it has to be him), and your point about Avery Fisher sucking just further proves how much better the NY Phil brass players are individually (whether their ensemble skills are always pinnicle is an opinion). If you can listen to that Mahler boxed set and not be impressed by the skill of those guys you should shovel elephant crap at a zoo instead of be a musician.
