I started on 'bone in 6th grade and switched to tuba in 8th. Since I learned positons as well as valve combinations it makes it fairly easy to switch back and forth. One great thing about playing trombone is the ear training that goes along with it. You have to find the postion and your ear is what tells you if you are correct. If you don't think this is important, sit next to a trombone player who has a bad ear!

And oh, yeah...

Playing bass 'bone in a jazz band ROCKS!!! Use lots of air and make sure they hear the bottom part.
