You are both right. The odds are controlled by two factors: 1.) the number of paying orchestra positions (the market), and 2.) the number of musicians competing for those positions (the demand). Both numbers have grown over time, it seems to me. So, the market is bigger, but the demand is bigger still, so the odds of getting one of those gigs is still worse.
