Hey, i had a similar experience.

When i got my horn it had (and still has) those old style S linkages and the vlaves made a lot of noise. The guys i bought it from (TE) said there's nothing that you can do about it; old valves are gonna be noisy. Our local repairman said the same thing. So i took it for 2 1/2 years. Finally, I said heck this aint gonna work having to hear this everytime i play. Fortunately, i had another unrealted issue with my horn and we took it to a music shop recommended by none other than Mr. Dave Zerkel. The guy looks a the horn and said sure i can fix this, you know what, i can fix this valve noise too. Took 4 days (weekend included) got my horn back, played fine, no noise!

Get you horn to a profesisonal who KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING and let him fix it. It's not terribly expensive (<$100) and it saves you the worry and stress of maybe doing something wrong.

Doug "laughs now when people get scammed into buying 'quiet' replacement linkages for old horns" G
