I use alcohol(rubbing,NOT vodka) and whiting to clean satin silver. Any sort of silver polish, ground into the pores, darkens the finish. Whiting and alcohol, simply applied with a cloth, loosens all sorts of dirt and tarnish, and wipes up easily with another clean cloth. The best part about this process is that it is safe, has no dangerous fumes, and the black produced will easily wash right off your hands with soap and water. And, the instrument simply glows. For bright silver and gold-plate, I use Tarni-Shield, and am really careful with the gold-plate, for it is thin and soft, and easily removed. For long-lasting protection to your satin-silver once it is clean, I recommend using Hagerty's, in the blue spray can, but use in a ventilated area, as the fumes are nasty. Let it completely dry, then remove with a terry towel. If anyone is curious as to what a horn looks like that has had this treatment, e-mail me privately and I'll send you a couple of photos.
