Mr. Fletcher actually had three of the York-type Holtons, his third was Bob Tucci's gold-wash bell one. There has been a LOT of discussion about these special BATs....I'd strongly recommend a search of the tubenet archives, as there's a wealth of info here about the "Jacobs-model" Holtons (as well as other big Holtons)
In my mind nothing comes close to the sound in my head as my Holton,
it is a strong powerful and capable tuba which I love more the more I use it in performance ... its truly a glorious instrument and I am very very fortunate to own it
oh, to briefly answer...late 50's to early 70's for the "Jacobs model" horns, no one seems able to answer "how many" were made....there's a few around, the good ones seldom come available
