placing the mic higher, more in line with your bell, will generally give you more "grit" or "dirt", which would be nice in a boomy room which echoes mainly high frequencies. I've been trying to put together my boston tape in a very dry room, and I've had to move the mic back to about 20-25 fee away, though still fairly high up (about 13-15 feet). That has helped the smoothness I'm trying for become a little easier to capure on mini-disc. If I were recording in our resonant, boomy recital hall I'd have the mic high and at about half that distance.

good luck.
