In my Opinion the metronome is an essential instrument for getting a feeling for a steady beat, the feeling for the different tempi and for learning to subdivide rhythmic passages.
But you should be no slave to the metronome.
A big part of the music-literature, especially solos where you are the one who makes the tempi, lives from varying the tempo in a musical way, and in this case, the metronome is totally useless and counterproductive.
And you should develop a feeling, how fast or how slow you have to play a passage or solo without the help of the metronome for all the situations where no metronome will be available.
