I had the privilege of studying with Dave Zerkel in my undergrade. He couldn't have been more influential. He told me since I was a performance major that I should think of every lesson as an audition because he was my competition. If you think this way and practice toward this goal every week when you have that occasional great day and win, there's an unbelievable sense of accomplishment. Man... I bet that would have felt good if it ever happened. The making of a great teacher doesn't only go as far as the studio. Dave was just as influential off the court. It's like a big fuzzy blanket when a professor takes an interest in your non music classes as well as helping when you need it in your personal life. I am truly a better tuba player and most of all a better person for having studied with Dave.
