I'm trying to get a handle on mouthpiece theory. My reading so far goes a long way towards laying a basic foundation - but there are a many loose ends. While I have many questions, I'd like to handle them one-at-a-time, if possible.

So...today's question is:

All other things being equal, what is the effect of increasing the radius of the constricted end of the backbore?

Consider: "popping frequency", "color" of the sound, overall intonation, slotting vs steerability, relative ease of playing in various registers, etc.

Knowledgable answers greatly appreciated - even better would be a pointer to an authoritative source that discusses this sort of thing (I have read Benade, and Fletcher&Rossing, and will find JASA in the library, if necessary).
