As a bass guitarist, I can testify to the effects of temperature change. I've played many times in rooms where the central heat/ac systems let the temperature cycle up and down quite a range. Bass strings are under huge tension, and expansion and contraction can make a significant change in the amount of tension in a short time. Often my pitch can vary a quarter tone or more in just a couple of minutes, and my pitch changes are much worse than the horns in the band, while the electronic keyboards are totally unaffected. Some nights I'm constantly moving my pitch up and down, bending strings to raise the pitch in the middle of a note, and so on to try to compensate. Since the rest of the band listens to bass for pitch, it causes problems everywhere when I go out of tune.
