I think one could say that most recordings do not give a proper example of what an orchestra sounds like live. Having made several recordings with what most would consider a 'B' orchestra, the final product often ends up as B+ or even A-. Modern technology has offered us a way of producing "perfect" recordings. Just look at all these tapes that orchestras are now asking an auditionee to make as a screen to the prelims. These tapes have to be more perfect than any of us would ever play in an actual live round.

Chicago Symphony is notorius for producing CD's that sound nothing like the actual orchestra, most orchestras fall into the same. To be able to listen live (with your mini disk or portable DAT) will probably be the most 'real' performance.

p.s That Till recording that you speak of, they do fall apart, but that was one run through. The orchestra ran into having extra time on the recording session so they just threw it out on the stand and gave it a go. Pretty CLose though!
Also there is a Sheherazade recording that is one take. That will never happen in this 'modern' age.
