I heard a story once about Eugene Ormandy and Abe Torchinsky.
Ormandy told Torchinsky that a note was out of tune.
Torchinsky at that time had a tuba with a fifth valve slide that could be set two different ways. Torchinsky pulled a "dead" slide not attatched to any valve, played the note again, and said "any better?" Ormandy said, "Much better."
