I'm in the same boat as Matt here...however on my chamber music gigs I would fly with my PT-6. I have to admit, I was never charged extra on any flights...only had one run-in where they called the manager over to weigh and measure...then told me that it was OK (which I knew already).
Of course this was all prior to Sept. 11. I shudder at the thought of having to travel with instruments now.
