My best guess is because they are not widely available for trial, as most are pre-sold. When I call DEG to inquire for interested customers, most often they tell me 4 - 6 months wait. Rarely do they have one in stock to send down. Most of those who are interested and have "tuba-fever" simply don't want to wait that long...and for more of these to be used today in "major" orchestras, they probably would have had to have been bought back when the now-pro players were younger men WITH "tuba-fever".

An about-equally-good-but-$3500-more-expensive-tuba is the MW-2000, and often those are sitting on someone's shelf waiting for a buyer.

Availability = Sales

I would think that consideration of use in Philly says quite a bit, and is equal in consideration to use in 5 - 10 ROPA Orchestras.
