I'm sure there are metalurgists who can offer a better technical explanation, but most all metallic materials work harden. Any toolmaker can attest to that. And yes, I think that is one of the reasons why brand new horns might sound different after they are in service for a while. Actually, the entire horn vibrates when it is played... resulting in changes in the stucture of the brass. I know this phenomenon exists but one of the engineer-types on the board will have to define the technical issues.
