The 88 offered a little more control in the lower registers, but what was gained down there was lost up top. With a more conical mouthpiece (Helleberg, Tilz), the horn is completely free-blowing and resonant from middle F and up. The cup shape of the 88 dampered that.
I like the Tilz for the majority of the horn's range because the throat is smaller like the 88 (more resistance), but with a conical cup like the Helleberg. Doesn't help much on lower range, though.
