I have owned numerous F and a couple of EEb tubas over the years. If you can only afford one instrument then you need to decide several things 1) What are you going to be using the horn for 2) How much you want to spend 3) Used or new. I recently sold a Besson 983, a great horn but I had little practical use for the instrument. I play BBb in a brass band and didn't like its sound when i played it with the orchestra. I am currently using the MW45SLP as my "smaller" horn and find it is an exceptional horn and reasonably priced. If you are lucky enough to be near any of the major tuba dealers then spend time trying horns out. Try as many as you can, have others listen while you play and above all keep an open mind. Good luck!
