An elderly fellow hereabouts has actually built a euphonium (based on a Yamaha 321 body) using thayers. You wouldn't like it--it's impossible to get the 2nd branch short enough to play in tune and in general, the horn seemed to be pretty "airy" and EXTREMELY heavy, not to mention pretty much out of tune.

He'd made the entire valve section removable so that it could be serviced, which looked to be a nightmare. The huge thayer valve placement problems also made the horn extremely awkward to hold.

Thayers are probably best left to the jumbo slide-whistle people.
