Curt Wood, a well-known repairman in the Houston area patented his own valve system similar to a Thayer, but with virtually no resistance. If I remember correctly, the tubing was in a near-perfect circle. He said it was impractical to make a five valved instrument because of the size of the design and the resistance issue, but it could be used replace Thayer valves, as well as 5th valves on tubas. He said regular rotary or piston valves are simply the best thing going ergonomically, economics notwithstanding.
