This is only an opinion, but I think that the sound of a big euphonium is correct. Apprarently, Ravel orchestrated it with the Petite French Tuba in C, in mind. I think that there should be some hint of strain in the sound - it's not a pretty picture, afterall. I always liked the way Roger Bobo played it, regardless of what instrument, because he put some real dynamics into the phrasing. That's just my preference.
