I don't think it's so much a matter of where Gene's coming from, as it is a matter of where Ravel was coming from. It's hard to dispute that it wasn't the dark, smooth sound of the German F tuba that Ravel had in mind. Since orchestras generally don't carry full time euphonium players on their rosters, then somebody has to make a decision as to who's going to play the thing. That's how I see it, anyway. As long as the job gets done, that's the all conductor and audience are going to worry about. Usually.
