composer's intent is that the whole shootin' match be played on a Piano. Ravel just arrainged it for certain instruments. I happen to like it better played on tuba, and I am not the only one. the main point of my the earlier post is that music is not supposed to be always played on the instrument that makes it sound the prettiest. If I think the ox cart sounds better played by an instument that sounds like it's straining a little, then that's my opinion and I would try to sway a conductor into playing it that way.
