I have an Alexander double tuba. It is a double tuba in every sense of the word. That is, it is a 5 valve tuba, 4 valves to play the instrument and the 5th valve is used to switch between the F tuba and the CC tuba. BUT (isn't there ANWAYS a but?) it is a COMPENSATING double. A FULL double tuba (Like Tommy's 822, or Dr Young's BBb/EEE) means that when you switch between tubas, you use one set of valve slides, or the other. In a compensating system (like a comp euph) you use one set, OR BOTH. In the case of this instrument, it is a WONDERFUL F tuba, but unplayable really as a CC. The advantage is that ale flat 5th partial notes on the F tuba, are right in tune on the CC. 2&4 F# I play on the CC tuba perfectly in tune with the 2nd valve. It DOES take some getting used to.
