I remember watching a TV program where they showed the mathamatical calcutations for sound reproduction, quite detailed, but achievable in a controlled lab environment.

But thats not where we are at.

Tub a's are big, and therefor subject to greater variances than trumpets etc. There was a post a couple of months ago about a hypothetical question of what tuba to buy, most in tune, best sound etc.

People like Miraphone, Meinl, etc have got it mostly right in my oppinion because they recognise the inherrent inaccuracies that surround making a tuba, and they use their experience to produce an instrument that is mostly in tune, and has a sound quality and playability that allows us to compensate, be it with a 5th valve or lips.

Of course there is also still the greatest variable of all, the player. An instrument that is in tune for a particular player with a PT88 for example, would not nessecarily be in tune for another player using a Helleburg in Winter.

There are far to many variables that CANNOT be accounted for, so all we can do is find the closest for ourselves, and practice our ass off.
