File this under your for what it's worth department. I was asked to listen to Virko Baley's 1st Symphony with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony for a friend and give my opinion of the piece. Mr. Baley is a Las Vegas composer that will probably remain anonymous. His music, while intriquing, really isn't for the mainstream, IMHO. However, there was some marvelous tuba playing by Gary Adams on the recording. It is quite an extensive tuba part, not terribly soloistic, but rangy( I think I heard a couple of pedal D's and whole passle of high notes and everything in between). Mr. Adams demonstrated a great sound throughout the compass of the horn and handled some tricky rhythmic stuff quite well. I wouldn't run out and buy the recording, but I would run out and hear the Cleveland Chamber Symphony ASAP. Along with Mr. Adams, the rest of the group is very, very good. Yor mileage my vary.
