I wasn't at SERTEC to witness this competition, and don't know the level of playing in either band or orchestra category, but as far as actually playing the rep(in a band) as opposed to only seeing it in an excerpt book (for ochestra) I find fault. I think the chances of your college/community band playing Fingal's Cave are just as high as your college/community orchestra playing Prok.5 or Fountains.... Alot of the standard band tuba audition rep is not standard band rep....and the same goes for orchestral pieces as well. To top it off, its been alot harder for me to find a recording in Tower Records of Holst's 1st suite then it is to go find Symphonic Metamorphosis on CD. orchestral excerpts in general are a different beast than band excerpts, I think its hard to compare the two. In some ways its easier to be more forgiving on band excerpts than orchestral excerpts.
