hmmm...Somebody stole my ol' joke. (When some other tuba-er starts braggin' to me about their impressive accomplishments) with a sober face I state to them that I was the 1972 2nd Alternate "National Sousaphone Champion"

About a hundred years ago at the University of...NO: Memphis State , before marching band rehearsals (as section leader) I would occasionally hold the "SOUSAPHONE RACES". One of the trumpet players would sound "First Call", we would line up on the goal line MOUNTED on our sousaphones - with the bells turned perpendicular to the ground and on the ground (like a plow disk), and once we heard the rim-shot (no starting pistols were convenient), we would ride 'em 100 yards to glory. Occasionally, someone's bell would catch a rock in the field and their sousa would buck them right off into the mud...

...Cie la vie !

(Don't try this at home. Leave it to the professionals.)
