Everyone here is referring to recorded sound or live hall-sound with other instruments playing. I think a tuba is a totally different instrument if it's played ALONE in a hall (that's how tuba players get jobs) and YOU'RE the listener.

We KNOW how a tuba sounds when we play it (from under the bell) and our recordings reflect this concept. We also know how the instrument sounds in a small-ish room (where most of us practice), a sound similar to recordings. I've never heard any live, hall-played solo tuba sound anything like any this. I think the recordings are great and reflect WE hear the tuba, but I'll bet non-tuba players would have completely different opinions. (When was the last time a tuba player got another tuba player a job?) Shouldn't this be something to think about?
