We've strayed into an almost completely different topic here. Though I pointed out several on-stage no-no's, there are ways to be very subtile about "reading" - even during a performance.

I personally "survived" a number of years playing a weekly gig in a church orchestra. Not only did we have to listen to a sermon twice, but this particular preacher was often "off the wall" with his views. (I am a believer in Jesus the Christ, btw.)

Many of us read books on-stage at that gig. We would:

- set the book on the music stand

and/or

- get some satin-black spray paint at home and spray the cover of the book black.

Joe "the FIRST of these two choices, obviously, would be the one to consider for non-church performances --- ex: mvts. 1-2-3 of Symphony Fantastique...and 'reading' beats FALLING ASLEEP - which is what us over-40 guys tend to do when sitting still for a half an hour" S.
