Absolutely. Even worse is when conductors ask for more and more volume to the point where you feel like you are playing with a bad sound, and then they say, "Perfect!" I was principal in an honor band once where the other four guys were playing so loud and blatty that I thought about just getting up and leaving. After the rehearsal, the conductor took me aside and told me how unbelievably great it sounded. Go figure. I'd say we still have some work to do in educating fellow musicians about our instrument.
