If there is resistance when inhaling you are doing it wrong and the only effort it takes to empty your lungs is the 'effort' of relaxing and letting the air fall out. What it does take is lots of flexibility. Building strength unless done very carefully almost always reduces flexibility resulting in a smaller lung capacity.

This may work for an oboist or screach trumpet but not tuba.

Also, you should be able to get a very similar affect from a Variable Resistance Compound Gauge if you chose to use it for that purpose. Atleast that way you would have a visual cue as to your progress and how much pressure and vacuum you can create. Better yet blow up lots of balloons and drink lots of really thick shakes. Throw a party. ;b
