The 1st tuba I ever played on a daily basis was a kaiser Cerveny with string linkage. In some ways that was the best linkage I've encountered for mechanical efficiency, but the reliability was lacking.
The best solution I've witnessed are Rudolf Meinl valves. They are machined to have the same sort of tolerances as Hirsbrunner and Alexander valves, but are uniquely finished in such a way as to make them lighter weight for their size than anyone else's without sacrificing longevity. With less rotating mass, they create less force and will therefore wear at a slower rate.
I have also found, based upon a lot of instrument servicing in my shop, that the Hetman Rotor oils #11 or #12, and bearing oils #13 and #14, will optimize the operation of just about any rotor. To satisfy the most discriminating customer, he is developing an in-between rotor bearing oil, which will be #13.5.
