If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. You might not be too far off by suggesting the electric tuba with volume control. Back in the 1980's I used to have a Barcus Barry mouthpiece transducer hooked up to a pre-amp that fed a massive Peavy amplifier. I used to call it my electric tuba. You could hook any number of guitar effects into it which sometime produced interesting results.
If you were to do this though, maybe the powers in charge of the ensemble would realize your tubas' dilema.
