I can see your frustration and if I were faced with this situation, I would probably quit the group. However, I hate to see other instrumentalists discriminated against. If the conductor wants a string bass or electric bass, that is his decision but it is also his responsibility to make sure that they are used appropriately. I have used a synth bass is my own ensembles with very good results on several occasions. However, the synth player did NOT play the exact same part as the tubas. In fact the amp was placed behind the tubas for their benefit. They were able to tune themselves to that lowest fundemental tone and give the ensemble a more stable sense of intonation. To the audience it was barely audible. Can't we all just get along?
