Conventional lacquer polishes would probably help the lacquer, along the smae lines as you have mentioned. But, for real protection, I'd suggest Meguiar's Cleaner Wax (automotive). It is listed as being safe for clear-coat finishes, and protects against air pollution, road tar, harsh chemicals, acid rain, the sun and bird doo, so it should offer a significant amount of protection against what we do to instruments. I particularly like using Meguiar's on lacquer finishes because it will minimize or remove minor scratches.
