Hi Deb

The first thing I ALWAYS tell a kid in a first lesson is that the point of the first lesson is for the student to get to know me a little and for me to get to know him a lot. Have the student play a few easy things (based on skill) - I always like to hear a Low Bb (On tuba or Euph), Middle Bb, Bb Maj one octave (if possible) and a higher scale (Eb or F) one octave. Typically with these observations you will have more than enough information to determine a plan of attact. Work toward long term goals and don't try to be a miracle worker - you can't fix everything in one lesson. And by all means (I think Rick mentioned this) do NOT take anything for granted - Assume the student knows nothing. It is often the simple things that teachers forget to remind or work on with kids that are of true benefit.

If you ever have any questions feel free to drop me a line
