I must caution you about using the automatic gain control. What it will do is turn up the volume when the signal is low, and turn it down when it is high. That means it will turn up the record level when you are playing softly, and turn it down when you are belting it out. That will flatten out all your dynamics. Try a test of something with a really wide dynamic range, and you'll see what I mean. During your soft bits, that traffic outside will get really loud as the recorder turns up the gain (your soft bits will get loud, too--not what you were trying to achieve by playing softly). Setting it manually is a pain in the butt, but it's the only solution.
At least you have solved your distortion problem--that's big progress.
