Excellent points all around by both Jay and Rick. I had forgotten that Bruckner was constantly revising his compositions. I haven't seen the parts for the 5th and 6th Stymphonies, but was aware that he calls for bass tuba in mvts 1 and 3 o the 7th Symphony, but calls for contrabass tuba in the 2nd and 4th mvts. Clearly by that time, he was familiar with the contrabass tuba and it's capabilities.

My question was whether the bass tuba was the primary instrument at the time the 4th Symphony was composed.

However, the main point I was trying to get across is that it can be difficult to balance attempting to attain the composers desires by using a bass tuba, with producing a sound that can support a modern brass section.

Anyway, I'm glad the Wilson is working for Jay in his performances.
