I have used them and to a large extent, they do work. You need to get custom musician's ear plugs. These have a much more natural frequency response than any other type of earplug. They still produce occlusion (that boomy sound, like you get when you talk with you fingers in your ears), but its not too bad. It's certainly better than the losing your hearing, in which case, you won't hear you tuba at all.
