As an alternative to in-ear plugs, I use low profile earmuff style hearing protectors. I use them in winter rehearsals for drum & bugle corps. They work great! Everything is clarified. Yes, I find my tone perception has to be adjusted, but the details of the music are seperated from the 'noise' and room feedback. I can remove one side to hear spoken instructions. I've tried in-ear plugs of all types and after a while they all irritate my ears.

I wear them during rehearsals that include the percussion section. Without them it's too much sound pressure. I wear them whether I'm instructing or playing in the brass section. Years from now, my ears will thank me. As soon as we begin rehearsals outdoors, the protectors come off.

The "Peltor" company makes the widest variety of these type of protectors. I use the 'shotgunner' model. They fold up into a small fist sized package and fit nicely in my rehearsal bag.

Good luck!
