I wonder if the occlusion (that booming sound you get when you talk with your fingers in your ears, to paraphrase Mike) is causing hearing damage? It certainly seems loud. I use moulded musicians plugs when I teach (groups of 5 or so trumpets, or trombones etc), so in addition to playing I talk and sing loudly over the music. This sounds very loud in my ears!
Does anyone use plugs that minimise this (I've seen a variety of plugs, including some fancy ones that have what looks like small arials to 'tune' the attenuation).
Cheers,
