I don't advise using a minidisc recording unless you have a high quality microphone. The quality of a competition CD/Tape should try to be first class. Check with your school to see if they have any decent recording equipment. Most Universities have some equipment to record recitals. If your in high school, I'm sure your band director also has some equipment. The Falcone panel gets somewhere between 120-150 entries so they can't listen to everyone in one sitting. I've even heard a rumor that some of the guys listen to the discs in their cars or on portable CD players during trips. The point is that it is likely that your tape is not going to be played on the highest quality equipment so it should be recorded as professional as possible. It might cost some money but at least you'll have a good tape to use for future reference. The falcone sit has some suggested recording tips.
Good Luck.
